Keyword Research Tools You Should Be Using
If you are an experience SEO or blogger you are probably familiar with keyword research and you already have a set of keyword research tools that you prefer to use. You will however, most likely recognize the keyword research tools on this list, but have more than likely overlooked them to further your keyword research efforts. Huge Mistake! This is why we are publishing this article. Keep Reading…
#1: Soovle
This tool is great for getting a birds eye view on search data, trends, and grouping such activity into categories. This will garner results from Bing, Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, and a few others that own Search Traffic market share. Get the popular search terms with Soovle!
#2: Google Search Drop Down
This is when you go to Google, type in a phrase, and Google finished your sentence for you. It’s like Google has known me my whole life and knows what I am thinking! Well, not always. Google dropdown will show what is currently popular with the community. The great selling point about Google Search Box Dropdown is it’s real time data usage. You can’t get this data anywhere else. It’s immediate!
#3: Ubersuggest
Let’s say you want to use commonly overlooked keyword research tool #2 but did not want to check each term manually (by hand)? Introducing Ubersuggest! Ubersuggest actually goes out on your behalf and gets the Google suggestions for you. Ubersuggest will use image search, web search, and a few other searches to better help you get that real time data you need.
#4: Google Trends Analysis
Remember Google Insights For Search? Well now we have Google Trends. It’s a great Analysis tool for us to utilize for keyword research, search frequency, and search trends analysis. Google trends will show you charts and visibility over time, geographic data, and fluctuations in such data. Google Trends should not be your only source for data. Remember you will and should verify with other keyword research tools here in this list. Always great to get a 2nd opinion!
#5: Google Adwords Keyword Tool
You must have an Adwords or Google account for this. This is one of the single most important free keyword tool out there. The data is from Google themselves, and cannot be replaced by any 3rd party tool. Google has the most data on everybody in the United States and working its way worldwide.
#6: WordTracker
I love Wordtracker. It’s not the best, but it is a great tool to have on hand. Wordtracker is one of the oldest and most reliable keyword research tools available. They have a reliable data source, and update their database frequently. With the free keywords tool you will be able to do 1 search at a time, however if you want to do more you are going to need to sign up for an account. Wordtracker keyword generator is great for choosing which topics to write about for blog content as Wordtracker has an option called “Word Tracker Keyword Questions”.
#7: Yahoo! Clues
A very under rated keyword search tool. Extremely underrated in my opinion. When you visit Yahoo Clues to verify how awesome of a tool it is you will need to visit the trends analysis screen. This is where you can input your keyword data. What demographic information? Yahoo Clues has it! You can choose from men vs. women, age, sex, location, keywords that are searched for after yours, etc.
Free Keyword Research Tools
To conclude, this is hardly a list that you will want to lean on for a comprehensive list of keyword research tools, but it is a solid start for any beginner and a great fallback for the seasoned blogger or SEO professional. All the keyword research tools noted are free, simple, easy to use. What keyword research tools do you use? I would like to hear about them. Are they free? I invite you to leave your comments below.

OMG, Yahoo Clues? I had no idea that Yahoo was in the search game too. I do use Google Trends & Adwords. I used to use WordTracker way back when it was free and just starting. Now, it’s really pricey but may be worth it. I actually found one a while back that I just haven’t had the chance to really explore yet…Bottlenose. It’s intense. Thanks for this post. Shared for sure!

Hi Henry, Very impressive list of Keyword Research Tools. WordTracker has been in the game from year dot. But I have never used them. I use the Google Adwords keyword tool quite a bit, and the 2 other paid for keyword tools that I have used is Keyword Elite and SEO Elite.

I spend a lot of time doing keyword research, I have tried a few on the list, I mostly fall back on the Google Keyword tool, but that’s mainly because I know how it basically works. But I think its time to revisit some of these tools and see if there is one I like better. Thanks for sharing the list.

I guess it would depend on what niche you are in. I don’t think there is a keyword research tool that is better than the Google Keyword Tool. The other tools are helpful to give you some ideas to write about. If your blog is about news or current events then Google Trends or Yahoo Clues can give you ideas for blog posts by letting you know what search terms are popular in your niche right now. Thanks for commenting James.

I didn’t know about half of these tools. BTW a good tip for the Google Adword tool? Make sure to check the box for exact searches and not the broad term search. This way you will see more accurate representation of actual searches for the keyword term you are researching.
