A recent study by SEO firm Tasty Placement sheds some interesting new light on just what kind of difference can be made by social media advertising. Many businesses use these social networking platforms to connect with clients and promote their products, and the links placed on these well-ranked and indexed social media sites provide a valuable source of web traffic for these businesses. Which of the many social networks has the most SEO power? Let’s take a look at the results of the test that measured social media signals.
Tasty Placement used 5 different promotion techniques on various social networks to promote different websites, and left one unpromoted as a control group. They then measured the difference in search ranks after the promotional campaigns. The control group stayed almost the same, suggesting that the only factor influencing the other sites was the promotions. Twitter promotions yielded a slight increase in search ranking, but made the smallest difference out of them all. Facebook came in second as the most effective platform to campaign on, making a difference of almost 7 places in the search rankings. At the top of the list were Google’s services, making differences of 10 to 15 places in the search rankings for sites promoted on Google+ and voted +1 on Google’s search rankings. The takeaway from this study is that almost any social media advertising will positively influence search rankings, but that focusing on Google’s platforms in particular will return the best result.
